Cockswain is a 6-piece Irish/Celtic rock band from Phoenix. Formed in 2011 Cockswain made their St. Patrick’s Day debut in 2012 and have been working on developing their own style that can only be described as high energy Celtic rock with punk rock attitude. The word “Cockswain” means “one who steers the ship” but to the band, it’s more about overseeing one’s own destiny.
Many influences can be heard in Cockswain’s high energy hard driving music including The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Clash, Gogol Bordello, The Dubliners to name just a few. Their debut album titled “Seamus” was released in April 2015 and followed up with “For the Whiskey” in 2017 (both available on iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify among others).
Cockswain performs 3-hour sets on a regular basis at Phoenix area pubs like Seamus and Rosie McCaffrey’s, Fibber Magee’s, Skeptical Chymist, and Irish Hare. In 2018, Cockswain played festivals in Arizona, California, and Nevada, played an average of two local gigs per month, and opened for national touring acts. 2019 will be at least as active including the release of two new albums: One with all originals; and a second that features reworked versions of traditional Irish tunes.
